When to Replace Your PlayToTrim Scratch Board Surface

Hands inspecting a worn PlayToTrim scratch surface beside a fresh replacement abrasive sheet.

Replace your PlayToTrim abrasive surface when it is worn, damaged or no longer securely fitted. There is no universal replacement interval: use, scratching style and storage all matter. Check the board before each session and keep the PlayToTrim refill page handy when the surface needs renewal.

Inspect before you invite your dog over

With the board out of your dog's reach, look for lifting edges, tears, loose material or damaged areas. Check that the abrasive is secure and that the board itself is sound. If something is loose or broken, pause use. Asking for more scratching will not fix a damaged surface.

Separate wear from a training problem

A dog that sniffs or licks instead of scratching has not necessarily worn out the abrasive. Look at the behavior first. If the dog makes the learned movement but the surface appears worn, inspect it carefully before deciding to replace it. Do not increase the pressure or force a paw across the board to test it.

Prepare the replacement

  1. Put the board away from the dog while you work.
  2. Choose a compatible PlayToTrim replacement and follow its supplied fitting instructions.
  3. Check that the surface is firmly secured, with no loose edge accessible during scratching.
  4. Return the board to a stable, non-slip position and supervise the next session.

Do not guess at adhesives, solvents or cleaning treatments. Follow the product's care guidance and ask support if you are unsure how to fit your refill.

Restart with a short session

Recheck nails and pads after a few movements. Judge the filing effect of the renewed surface as you go; do not automatically repeat the duration used on a worn sheet. Stop when enough nail has been removed or your dog is uncomfortable.

Which refill pack should you choose?

Compare the current quantities and details on the PlayToTrim refills page. Base your choice on your actual use and storage space. A refill renews the abrasive; it does not repair a damaged board or treat an injured nail. Check rear nails and dewclaws as part of your wider routine.
